The Royal Marines have a base in Poole’s harbour, hiring officers and commanders to help serve the country in humanitarian needs. The Arts University of Bournemouth is also a large employer, providing opportunities to talented artists, architects and graphic designers. Manufacturing has declined since the 1960s but still employs around 17 per cent of the workforce and remains more prominent than in the economy of Great Britain as a whole. The gorgeous beaches and endless forests mean around 6 million visitors visit the county in the summer alone, which makes it no surprise why tourism is so important to Dorset. The county also has three main ports: Poole, Weymouth and Portland.
